Toward More Resilient Futures: Putting Foresight Into Practice in 2013 and Beyond (#31)

Launched in 2010, FEMA’s Strategic Foresight Initiative (SFI) is a transformative, community-wide effort to create an enduring foresight capability. A critical element of this process is the assessment and understanding of the many factors driving change in our world. Additionally, it is important to effectively and compellingly communicate the implications of these changes, in order to foster conversation and collaboration regarding how best to respond to these changes. In earlier works, SFI established a framework for foresight: deepening our understanding of the forces driving change in emergency management and delivering insights into the capabilities, tools, and partnerships needed for success in the future. In our recent publication Toward More Resilient Futures, SFI takes another step forward –beyond the analytical world of process and “theory,” toward the real world of practice. With a focus on practical applications of foresight, the document aims to:

1)      Spark future-thinking and discussion about recent key trends, and what they may signal for United States over the coming years;

2)      Spotlight efforts from the Whole Community that exemplify how we can develop the capabilities, tools, and partnerships to meet our future needs; and

3)      Inspire our community into action by profiling innovators working to solve big problems and build resilience.
