Developing a Fire Information Management System for DEWNR (#251)
The Fire Reporting Database (FRDB) was established in 2003 to report and maintain records of the prescribed burns carried out by DENR and the bushfire incidents to which the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR) responded. As DEWNR’s Fire Management Program has expanded, significant issues and limitations with the FRDB have become obvious and limiting. The evolution of this business has led to the need to develop the Fire Management Reporting System (FIMS) to meet current and future business needs. The FIMS Development Project aims to build a Fire Management Information and Reporting System to meet current business needs, to address current issues and provide additional functionality to assist in planning and implementing the Prescribed Burn program rather than just reporting on it.
Key outcomes of the FIMS are to provide the following benefits to the Fire Management Branch in DEWNR:
· Enable disciplined and standard adherence to Fire Management Policies and procedures
· Provide improved recording, reporting, reviewing and updating facility for Bushfire and prescribed burns
· Provide a single source of truth for burn planning documents (approved), fire reporting, proposed burns and change history reports
· Improve data sharing of statistical data and reports to be available to users that are internal and external to DENR (e.g. CFS)
· Provide a system to record and manage the procedures involved in planning prescribed burns
· Provide a system to plan, manage and control the operational implementation of the prescribed burn program
This poster outlines the Environmental Assessment (EA) component of FIMS, an aspect of prescribed burn planning that takes considerable time and effort in South Australia, due to the requirements of the Native Vegetation Act. The EA module of FIMS is demonstrated and evaluated.
