For at least the next generation the threat of wildfires will be one of the most important fire problems that the world will face, consuming more resources than anyone could have imagined just a few years ago. The threat today to millions of people, to their homes, and to their communities is exponentially larger than it used to be, and the economic consequences of wildfire over the next several years incalculable. The potential losses could be staggering. There are approximately 70,000 communities at risk in wildland areas in the United States.

This presentation will provide an overview of the comprehensive collaborative approach being taken in the United States to combat this growing threat. There is not a single solution but coordinated resources that include community education and engagement, regulatory practices, research and other mitigation programs. The approach relies heavily on partnerships that involve residents, business owners, land managers, community officials, planners and developers, insurance companies and emergency responders all working together to save lives and property from wildfire.
