Satellite communications technology is a powerful tool in supporting an emergency response effort. Two of the challenges that have been identified by emergency responders and management teams are:
• Communication between resources
• A measurement of the effectiveness of fighting a fire by air
Satellite technology provides solutions to meet these challenges. Equipment using the Iridium satellite network that is installed on an aircraft, or in a vehicle, will provide real time communication. This includes data (position reports, aircraft information and messaging) and voice (phone calls). The Iridium satellite network is completely global – crews will always be able to communicate with the ground and each other, as there are not any blackout areas.
Satellite technology provides the ability to:

• Monitor the locations of all resources
• Contact crews immediately via phone call or message for dispatch or to receive status updates
• Map the fire from the air in real time, creating a more accurate and faster picture on the ground for deploying response teams
• Record GPS coordinates of water pick-ups and drops
• Record volume of water dropped
• Provide flight data for post-situation analysis
• Create a real time view of all resources for complete command and control
It is a requirement in many countries around the world, and in many industries, to have a satellite communication system on board aircraft that are on a contract. Satellite equipment can enhance safety, increase operational efficiency, and meet contract requirements.
There are multiple options available for communication, data management, and the coordination of assets. Satellite technology will assist with meeting challenges facing emergency management.
